A FILMIC STUDY ON THE NATURE OF GRIEF

A PECULIAR SHADE OF BLUE screened as work-in-progress at CAST (Cornubian Arts + Science Trust), Cornwall, UK in March 2022 and Scenstudion Gerlesborg, Sweden in September 2022 and FABRICA, Brighton in November 2023, with a Supporters Online Screening in February 2024.
During this period of R+D, an alchemy began to take place between audience members and the piece itself through shared experience.
In-person events opened space for reflective preparation prior to, and meal to conclude a screening where stories and experiences, reactions and feedback offered by the audience became a natural catalyst to further the evolution of the project.
Ultimately, audience interaction serves as heartbeat to this work.
It became clear A Peculiar Shade of Blue needed to continue its journey through ITERATIONS in order to reflect the ongoing and cyclical, ever-changing nature of grief.
Grief returns to us again and again, each time, both it and we are changed.
In repeating an utterance of the same thing, over and over,
our perspective and understanding deepen.
Each ITERATION for A Peculiar Shade of Blue
offers its own incarnation.
ITERATION #1
As the original six STANZAS were shot during the pandemic, they carry a unique quality and atmosphere which belongs to this time. This version is complete, core to the project and stands as the canvas we continue to work on.
The original six STANZAS stand as ITERATION #1.

The films, accompanying talk and workshops are open to groups and organisations who wish to host singular events or work over an extended period of time with the project on an ongoing basis.

ITERATION #2
ITERATION #2 is currently in development and will progress naturally as Iteration #1 navigates different audiences, communities and cultures in real time. As always, the work is unfolding to itself and I do not know where it will take me.
The shape and delivery of A Peculiar Shade of Blue is likely to morph as audience input and the journey it treads weaves into the fabric of the piece. At the same time, subtle suggestion found within the symbology of the original six STANZAS already provide specific anchors to open out and explore grief traditions from around the world at a deeper level.
The project will, in good time, deliver an art book and greater version of the written word, to include still photography, diary entries, interviews and insights to accompany the films, and I hope, work as a most beautiful companion.
BOOK OF POEMS has been created to offer a skeleton version of the script only as it is written for Iteration #1 as an interim, and is intended for audience members who have attended A Peculiar Shade of Blue in person as a tool for reflection.
